Bremen February 09
Day 1 Wednesday 18th February - AC Milan Game We get lift out to airport and successfully get our bags on as cabin luggage despite Ryanair's new restrictions. These actually make it fair for everyone. Flight is quick 1hr 20 mins and arrives early. We are straight off planeand onto number 6 tram which taks about 14 minutes into the city centre. Someone on the tram asks if they can help us when they see us lookig at the map - this set the pattern for the next few days as people here are really friendly. It is a short walk to the Bremen Youth Hostel at KalkStrasse. David thinks its like a hotel. Andy is pleased to see a licenced bar. Craig spots the pool tables.
After a quick change its off into town to get a 2 day Erlebnis Card which allows unlimited travel. The boys decide to try traditional German food - ein chicken nuggets mit pommes frites und coca cola. McDonalds in Germany have toilet attendent who expect tips. Wifi is not free and costs £8 for 60 minutes!
We get the bus to the ground and buy scarves. Werder Bremen have a fans reception for visiting supporters so we visit that. Lots of AC Milan supporters , Italien food as well as a bar and football games on show - all this under the stadium.
We head up to our seats an hour before the start and take photos. As the game gets nearer the atmosphere builds up. The game starts and 42,000 people sing. The East stand sings "Werder" and we in the West shout "Bremen. The game finishes 1-1 after all the pressure from Werder Bremen. Its an hours walk back to the hostel and after hot chocolate off to bed.
Day 2 Thursday 19th February - Football Museum
The hostel breakfast is top quality with a good selection of food. We head off to the players training followed by a trip round the museum. We play in a park before walking back as teh snow pelts down. We visit bowlnfun near the train stationand have to go in a creepy creepy elevator to reach it. Craig worries about murder or worse... Two games and a drink for €5. Then we walk through the shopping area and slide down the chute which is covered in snow. Shoppers narrowly avoid getting hit as David and Craig come down the ice covered chute at some speed.Back to the Youth Hostel and after a spicy noodle dish and semolina its cards night in the lounge area. Luckily the bar is open as long as wanted..
Day 3 Friday 20th February - Spiel Coolisse Play Complex
Luckily we find that the bus at the top of the street takes us all the way to the indoor play area, Spiel Coolisse . Unluckily it takes 45 minutes to get there. There is a shopping centre next to this so the boys are deposited for an all day session. After 20 minutes Andy is bored by the shops. The boys pop out for lunch eating traditional German food at Subway. At 4 we travel another 45 minutes back to the Youth Hostel. Despite Andy explaining how exciting it would be to go to a German beer hall the boys insist a quiet night in playing cards is for the best.
Day 4 Saturday 21st February - Universum Science Museum
We walk into town to get a 2 day ticket to the science museum. The museum has 250 interactive exhibits - some fun others boring. The boys enjoy going through the womb exhibit and delivering themselves newly born. They can not see what all the fuss is about. They show me some of the interesting pictures in the exhibit.... The museum has an outside area too and they sepnd some time playing there. Back into town after lunch and we visit a cake shop to try out the local delights. A Berlinner is a kind of doughnut ball with jam filling and iced topping. Back att eh Youth Hostel Andy pops out to watch the last 30 mins of Werder Bremen Cottbuss live on TV and is surprised that football is live while the Bundisliga plays.
After tea at the youth hostel - beef stew and rice - we play cards, pool and Crazy Taxi till late.
