Moselle-Rhine Valley March 2011

A flight to Frankfurt Hahn and cycle down the Moselle wine valley through the well known wine towns to fortress Koblenz then up the Rhine valley. Map here.

Day 1Thu (22 miles)

Thu 17 Mar 11 Flight FR 4383 07:20 Depart 10:05 Arrive £20. Taxi to Zell for €8. With over 4 million vines, it is the largest wine-producing town on the Mosel and home to the famous Schwarze Katz. Pick up bikes from Thomas at Fahrradverleih Mesenich, Corray 33,56856 Zell and cycle to Cochem along Moselle river on the Moselradweg for bikes. Visit to Mustard Factory. Stay in Cochem Youth Hostel for night £20 under the shadow of Reichsburg Castle the tallest castle on the Moselle and 1000 years old. Trains every half hour.

Day 2 Fri (40 miles)

Cycle to the Moselle to Koblenz for lunch. Four choices – Alt Brauhaus, alt Coblenz, Trattoria de raffaele, Los Gauchos are all close by in the old town. and then onto the Rhine’s oldest castle finally to stay at Hotel Ebertorin Boppard for £25 including breakfast. Trains every half hour. Visit to Roman Fort obligatory.

Day 3 Sat (30 to 50 miles)

Cycle the Upper Middle Rhine Valley – a world heritage site – through the highest concentration of castles in Europe. 40 castles line the route cycled today. Train option all day every hour but Mainz is destination. Lunch in Bingen. Stay in Mainz, in Koenigshof Hotel for £30 on Scotland Street opposite the main railway station.

Day 4 Sun ( 8 miles)

Up early to cycle to catch train at 08:30. Second train available at 9:30. €7.5 each on group ticket. Arrive Bullay at 11:05. Cycle to Zell . Drop off bikes and then get taxi at 12:15 back to airport for €8.  Sun20 Mar 11 Flight FR 4382 14:25 Depart 15:15 Arrive £10
